Brain ultrasound is essential to neonatal care. State of the art of scanning is provided in this seminar, written based on experience by European neonatologists. The focus is on aspects that have great clinical significance and the aim is to lead the way for neonatal caregivers, clinicians and radiologists alike. The literature on these topics is reviewed and where possible new suggestions for classification are offered as are indications for further research. Where appropriate the extra value of MRI is pointed out. The group that generated these data is an active training team endorsed by the European Society of Neonatology.
