Epigenome Roadmap

Welcome to the Epigenome Roadmap! Here, we have collected research papers describing the main findings of the NIH Roadmap Epigenomics Program, the aim of which was to systematically characterize epigenomic landscapes in primary human tissues and cells. The papers are complemented by eight threads each of which highlights a topic that runs through more than one paper. Threads are designed to help you explore the wealth of information collectively published across several Nature Research journals. Each thread consists of relevant paragraphs, figures and tables from across the papers, united around a specific theme.

We invite you to explore the research content, the News & Views, the video and other associated material.

We at Illumina are very pleased to support the Nature Epigenome Roadmap Explorer. Epigenomics is essential to understand the functional dynamics of the genome, and its role in human health and disease. The interpretation of epigenetic modifications has been limited by the lack of a reference set. Reference epigenome maps of all relevant human cell types will empower scientists to evaluate the importance and consequences of these epigenetic changes as well as their impact on health. The NIH Roadmap Epigenomics Project is a major step towards providing such a reference map.

This project carries a particular significance for us at Illumina, where our mission is to advance human health by unlocking the power of the genome. Epigenomics is a leap into previously uncharted territory, where we all seek to understand the role and importance of epigenetics in biology. This understanding will be vital to help focus our continued innovation in sequencing technology and bioinformatics strategies. By enabling epigenetic work to continue breaking new ground, we will gain a deeper understanding of how the environment and nutrition will modulate the epigenome. This knowledge will have a major impact on increasing our understanding of the functional regulation of the genome and the potential impact of epigenetics on human diseases.

Illumina is proud to be a part of the Nature Epigenome Roadmap Explorer by enabling scientific advances through innovative technology and by sponsoring the public dissemination of knowledge.

Applauding the project,
