Michelle managed advanced therapy clinical trials at University College London, and most recently ran a stratified medicine consortium and clinical trial for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis at Queen Mary University, London. Michelle joined the journal in May 2016.

Rosy Favicchio nBME@nature.com

Rosy developed approaches for cancer diagnostics and therapeutics using metabolic in vivo molecular imaging at Imperial College London, and most recently she branched out into proteomics and cell signalling. Her expertise lies primarily in quantitative data analysis and fluorescent-based assays. Rosy joined the journal in June 2016.

João researched mechanisms of immune tolerance, infection and host–pathogen interactions, as well as the role of T helper cells in infection and on how the immune system orchestrates skin inflammation. He joined the journal in October 2016, having previously worked as an editor for Nature Biotechnology, Nature Reviews Rheumatology and Nature Reviews Cardiology.

Alexia-Ileana Zaromytidou a.zaromytidou@nature.com

Alexia received her PhD from the London Research Institute of Cancer Research UK (now The Crick Institute) under the mentorship of Dr. Richard Treisman, and pursued her postdoctoral research in the lab of Dr. Joan Massagué at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York. Alexia joined Nature Cell Biology in 2010, and led the journal as its Chief Editor until January 2019 when she became the launch Chief Editor of Nature Cancer, the new, cancer-dedicated journal of Nature Research. Nature Cancer aims to cover the breadth of cancer research publishing fundamental preclinical, translational and clinical work and Alexia oversees all areas of the journal, handling papers across its scope.

Jie Wang jie.wang@nature.com

Jie Wang obtained her PhD in 2010 from Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, and then carried out postdoctoral work in the lab of Lou Lu at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Jie worked as a scientific editor at Cell Research before joining Nature Cell Biology in April 2017. Jie is based in the Shanghai office of Nature Cell Biology and handles manuscripts in the area of cancer biology. 

Zhe Wang zhe.wang@nature.com

Zhe Wang received his PhD from Purdue University in 2013. His doctoral work with Harm HogenEsch aimed to understand the role of SHARPIN in inflammation and its relevance to autoimmune diseases. Zhe then joined the lab of Patrick Hwu at MD Anderson Cancer Center, where he studied host resistance to cancer immunotherapy. Zhe worked as scientific editor at The Journal of Experimental Medicine before joining Nature Cell Biology in January 2018. Zhe is based in the Shanghai office of Nature Cell Biology.

 

Nature Communications

Ylenia Lombardo ylenia.lombardo@nature.com

Ylenia joined the journal in June 2015. She obtained her PhD in molecular oncopathology from the University of Palermo, Italy, investigating the molecular mechanisms underlying the survival of cancer stem cells. She then carried out her postdoctoral research at Imperial College, UK, focusing on the role of the Notch pathway on breast cancer stem cells and resistance to endocrine therapy. Ylenia is based in the London office and she is handling papers in the areas of cancer stem cells, cancer signalling and cancer therapy.

Stephanie joined Nature Communications in September 2017. She received her PhD in cancer biology from National University of Singapore. In 2011,  she joined Imperial College London for her postdoctoral work to study protein kinases and forkhead box transcription factors in breast cancer development and cancer drug resistance and following that she investigated inhibitors of Thousand-and-one amino kinases (TAOKs) as potential drug targets for breast cancer treatment at King's College London. She is handling manuscripts in areas of cancer cell biology and cancer molecular biology. She is based in the London Office.

Aishwarya Sundaram aishwarya.sundaram@nature.com

Aishwarya Sundaram started as an Editor at Nature Communications in September 2017. Before joining Nature Communications she worked for several years in the pharmaceutical industry on drug discovery projects spanning multiple therapeutic areas, and obtained her PhD in cancer and obesity research from Heidelberg University, Germany. Currently, she handles cancer metastasis and therapy-related submissions at Nature Communications, and works in the Berlin office.

 

Nature Ecology & Evolution

Vera Domingues vera.domingues@nature.com

Vera joined Nature as a locum Associate Editor in 2012, handling the fields of ecology and evolution, and in 2013 she moved to Nature Communications, where she managed a team of editors. She joined the launch team of Nature Ecology & Evolution in 2016. Vera obtained her PhD from the University of Azores, studying the evolution of coastal fish in the Atlantic and Mediterranean, and collaborated with the Eco-Ethology Research Unit at ISPA in Lisbon and the University of California at Santa Cruz for her dissertation. Her postdoctoral work took her to Harvard University where she investigated the genomics and evolution of adaptive coloration in wild mice.

Marian joined Nature as a News & Views Editor in 2012, commissioning and editing News & Views articles across the biological sciences, including ecology, evolution, genetics, cancer and microbiology. She joined the launch team of Nature Ecology & Evolution in 2016. Marian’s PhD is from the University of Melbourne, where she worked in the immunology division of the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute on mathematical modelling of B-cell responses. She moved to the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich for postdoctoral work, during which she also wrote for Nature’s news team as an intern and freelance reporter.

Patrick joined the company in 2005 as an Assistant Editor at Nature Reviews Genetics and Nature Reviews Cancer. In 2008 he moved to Nature, where he served as Senior Editor covering ecology and evolution, before becoming Chief Editor of Nature Ecology & Evolution in 2016. He has handled primary manuscripts and review articles across the entire breadth of ecology and evolution, as well as advising and writing for other sections of Nature. Patrick completed his DPhil in experimental evolution in Paul Rainey’s lab at the University of Oxford, UK, and did his postdoctoral work on evolutionary and ecological genetics in Linda Partridge’s lab at University College London, UK, in association with Charles Godfray’s lab at Imperial College London, UK.

Kyle Vogan k.vogan@us.nature.com

Kyle obtained his PhD from McGill University, Canada, under the supervision of Philippe Gros, using the classical mouse mutants Splotch and Loop-tail to study the genetics of neural tube closure. For his postdoctoral work, he joined Cliff Tabin at Harvard Medical School, US, where he studied the developmental mechanisms underlying vertebrate left-right axis specification. He joined Nature Genetics in 2003. Kyle handles manuscripts in all areas of the journal, including cancer genomics. 

 

Tiago Faial tiago.faial@us.nature.com

Tiago obtained his PhD from the University of Cambridge, UK, under the supervision of Jim Smith and Roger Pedersen, where he studied gene regulatory networks and signaling cascades that underpin mesoderm differentiation. For his postdoctoral work, Tiago joined Joanna Wysocka's laboratory at Stanford University, US, where he studied the dynamics of epigenetic landscapes in pluripotency. He joined the Nature Genetics team in 2015. Tiago handles manuscripts in all areas of the journal, including cancer genomics.

Jamie D. K. Wilson immunology@us.nature.com

Jamie initially read Biological Sciences at the University of Warwick, Coventry, UK and then completed his DPhil. at the Institute of Molecular Medicine at Oxford University, UK under Andrew McMichael, focusing on the host's immune response to HIV and EBV infection. After leaving Oxford University, Jamie joined the immunology team of Frances Gotch at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, Imperial College, London, UK. He continued to work on HIV during his post-doc, turning his attention to the immune responses of long term nonprogressors. Jamie joined the staff of Nature Immunology prior to its launch in 2000.

Laurie received a BS in microbiology at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, MI, USA). She earned her PhD under David Dubnau at New York University (New York, NY, USA), examining DNA replication and recombination, and subsequently studied protein-DNA interactions with Nick Cozzarelli (University of California, Berkeley, CA, USA) and Saleem Khan (University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA, USA). Recombination interests led to studies in immunoglobulin class switching with Nancy Maizels (Yale University, New Haven, CT, USA). After a stint as assistant professor at the Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN, USA) looking into mechanisms of organ rejection, she finally left the Eppendorfs behind in 2001 to become an editor of Nature Immunology.

Zoltan initially read Zoology at the University of Reading, UK followed by a short stint working as a marine biologist in Norway where he developed an inordinate fondness for anything without a backbone. Following this he was "re-educated" in immunological lore firstly working on corneal allografts with Andrew George at Imperial College London, UK, and then a PhD with Anne Cooke at GSK and Cambridge University, UK, looking at immunological tolerance. He did his postdoc with Shimon Sakaguchi at Kyoto University, Japan looking at regulatory T cells. He then moved into editing firstly as the editor of Trends in Immunology before starting with Nature Immunology.

Ioana received a BS degree in biology at 'Al. I.Cuza' University (Iasi, Romania). She did her doctoral work under the supervision of H.P. Tony at Wurzbug University (Wurzburg, Germany), where she investigated aspects of transcriptional regulation and signal transduction of the B cell marker CD23. Her postdoctoral work in the laboratory of C. Guidos (University of Toronto, Toronto, Canada) focused on investigating the function of Notch during the early stages of T cell development. Ioana joined the staff of Nature Immunology in 2009.

Iskra Staneva materials@nature.com

Iskra completed her doctoral degree in theoretical physics at Lund University, Sweden, working on intrinsically disordered proteins. Continuing as a postdoctoral fellow at Cambridge University, UK, she developed models for computational studies of protein crystallisation. Iskra transitioned to scientific publishing in 2015, working as an editor at BioMed Central. In April 2016 she joined Nature Materials, where the cancer-related manuscripts she handles are on bioimaging, drug delivery and fundamental cell properties, and behaviour.

Amos Matsiko materials@nature.com

Amos Matsiko obtained an MEng in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Sheffield and subsequently carried out his PhD and post-doctoral research at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland on biomaterials, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine for a range of musculoskeletal applications. He also carried out an industrial collaborative project with Integra LifeSciences, developing nerve guidance conduits for peripheral nerve repair. Amos began his editorial career at Nature Communications in April 2016 and joined Nature Materials in June 2017. He handles manuscripts in the broad area of bioengineering including biomaterials, drug delivery and mechanobiology. Amos is based in the London office.

Saheli Sadanand s.sadanand@us.nature.com

Saheli received her undergraduate degree in molecular biophysics and biochemistry from Yale College. She then joined the Yale Department of Immunobiology, where she studied flu-specific memory B cells. After obtaining her Ph.D., she investigated the programming and maintenance of isotype-specific B cells in HIV-infected patients as a post-doctoral fellow in the laboratory of Galit Alter at the Ragon Institute of MGH, MIT and Harvard. Saheli began her editorial career as Locum Associate Editor at Nature Biotechnology in 2018 and joined Nature Medicine in 2019. Saheli handles papers related to immunology, rheumatologic diseases and immunotherapies, including cancer immunotherapies. Anna Ranzoni anna.ranzoni@nature.com 

Anna completed her undergraduate studies in biology at the University of Milan, followed by a master’s degree in genetics at the University of Pavia in Italy. She then pursued her PhD at University College London, where she studied human amniotic fluid stem cells and their therapeutic potential for brittle bone disease. Anna continued her research as a postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Ana Cvejic at the University of Cambridge and the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, working on the characterization of human blood stem cells during prenatal development by single-cell genomics methods. Anna joined Nature Medicine in 2020, and she handles papers on genetics, genomics, cell therapy and gene therapy.

Allison Doerr a.doerr@us.nature.com

Allison began conducting research in polymer chemistry as an undergraduate at Vassar College. She obtained her Ph.D. in Chemistry from Princeton University working in George McLendon's laboratory, where she studied de novo protein receptor design and investigated protein-ligand interactions using NMR spectroscopy. She covers biochemistry and chemical biology content for the journal, including proteomics, metabolomics and structural biology. Allison joined Nature Methods in February 2005 and has been Chief Editor since November 2018.

Emily White microbiology@nature.com

Emily received a BSc in Microbiology and further developed her knowledge by studying for a PhD in Microbiology at the University of Manchester. Her time was split between the laboratories of Ian Roberts and Richard Grencis, looking at the interactions between the mammalian intestinal microbiota and the intestinal helminth parasite, Trichuris muris. Emily joined the Nature Microbiology team in November 2017.

 

Nature Nanotechnology

Chiara Pastore nano@nature.com

Chiara has a first degree and a PhD in chemistry, obtained from the University of Pisa and from Scuola Normale Superiore, Pisa. During her PhD she focused on the structural biology and biochemistry of iron binding proteins and spent few months at EMBL in Heidelberg and a longer research time at the National Institute for Medical Research in London. She then moved across the pond, to carry out her post-doctoral work on protein-RNA interactions at Columbia University in New York City and then back to the UK, at Imperial College London, where she worked on viral proteins. She started her editorial career in October 2015 at Nature Communications and joined Nature Nanotechnology in June 2017. Chiara is based in London.

Mel studied cisplatin resistance in mismatch-repair-defective cells at the Genome Damage and Stability Centre at the University of Sussex, UK.  As the chief editor of Nature Protocols she does not usually handle specific protocols but oversees the overall direction of the journal.

Katharine Barnes k.barnes@nature.com

Katharine completed a PhD at the Institute of Cancer Research, UK, investigating whether p53 is a response determinant for platinum based anticancer drugs in ovarian cancer. She then moved to the University of Pittsburgh, US, and evaluated the cell cycle phosphatase CDC25 as a potential anticancer drug target. Katharine handles the cell culture and animal model protocols in the cancer biology area.

Anna received her PhD in Cell Biology from Imperial College London, UK. She continued her research work as a postdoc in Claire Wells’ laboratory at King’s College London investigating a kinase-mediated signalling pathway in breast cancer migration. She joined Nature Reviews Cancer as a Locum Associate Editor in May 2016.

Ulrike received her PhD in Medical Oncology from University of Oxford where she researched Notch signalling in endothelial cell metabolism and tumour angiogenesis with Adrian Harris and Barbara Fielding. She then worked as a postdoc in Peter Carmeliet’s laboratory at KU Leuven researching vascular metabolism in the context of cancer and diabetes. She joined Nature Reviews Cancer as an Associate Editor in July 2017.

Diana Romero Diana.Romero@nature.com

Diana obtained her PhD in Biochemistry from the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid (Spain) and did postdoctoral research at Maine Medical Center Research Institute (USA) and Imperial College London (UK), always with an interest in cell signalling in cancer. Diana joined the Nature Reviews Clinical Oncology team in July 2015, and became the Chief Editor of the journal in September 2017. She mainly handles articles discussing the importance of tumour biology in treatment outcomes, and the regulatory and societal aspects associated with clinical research.

David obtained a BSc in biochemistry from the Imperial College London. Subsequently, David became a Research Assistant working within the Membrane/Cytoskeletal Signalling Group of the National Heart and Lung Institute Cardiovascular Sciences Department, Imperial College London, at the same time conducting a PhD focused on mechanisms of leukocyte trafficking. After moving to King's College London Cardiovascular Division in 2009, David conducted a short post-doctoral project before moving out of the laboratory and into medical publishing. Since joining Nature Reviews in 2011, he has worked on a range of titles, joining the Nature Reviews Clinical Oncology team in 2014. He has broad interests in oncology, but particularly in oncogenic signalling and metabolism, haematological oncology, and tumour immunology and immunotherapy.

After studying pharmacy at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, Germany, Clemens performed doctoral research work at the University of Oxford, UK, investigating ways to improve oncolytic adenovirus virotherapy in the context of ovarian cancer. After obtaining his DPhil, he continued this work as a postdoctoral researcher. Clemens joined Nature Reviews as an Associate Editor in April 2014 and became a member of the Nature Reviews Urology team in August 2014. Following his promotion to Senior Editor in June 2016, Clemens was the Acting Chief Editor of Nature Reviews Gastroenterology & Hepatology from May 2018 before returning to Nature Reviews Urology in March 2019. In June 2020, he became Chief Editor of Nature Reviews Disease Primers.

 

Nature Reviews Drug Discovery

Teresa Villanueva t.villanueva@nature.com

Teresa obtained her PhD in Joaquín Arribas' laboratory at the Vall d'Hebrón Institute of Oncology in Barcelona, Spain, where she studied the role of the metalloproteinase TACE in breast cancer. She continued her research work as a postdoctoral fellow in Anna Baffico's laboratory at Mount Sinai Hospital, New York, US, investigating how WNT signalling contributes to breast and ovarian cancer initiation. She has worked for Nature Reviews since 2010.

Claire Greenhill c.greenhill@nature.com

Claire received her BSc in Zoology from Durham University, UK, and her MSc in Conservation Biology from the University of Kent at Canterbury, UK. Claire joined Nature Research in September 2009, and became Chief Editor of Nature Reviews Endocrinology in February 2015.

Alan Morris alan.morris@nature.com

Alan received his BSc in Biochemistry from the University of Sussex, UK, and PhD in Experimental Neuropathology from the University of Southampton, UK, where he defined the cerebral clearance pathways of amyloid-β. Alan moved to Chicago, USA, to work as a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the College of Medicine at the University of Illinois, researching the pathogenesis of Alzheimer disease with a specific interest in the role of the cerebrovasculature. Alan joined Nature Reviews as an Assistant Editor for Nature Reviews Neurology and Nature Reviews Nephrology in June 2016. He joined the Nature Reviews Endocrinology team as an Associate Editor in January 2017.

Katrina Ray nrgasthep@nature.com

Katrina studied for a BSc in Microbiology at the University of Manchester, UK. Next, as part of the EIMID programme, she worked at the Institut Pasteur (Philippe Sansonetti group), Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology (Arturo Zychlinsky group) and Karolinska Institutet (Birgitta Henriques–Normark group) before carrying out her PhD studying Shigella flexneri at Imperial College London, UK, under the supervision of Prof. Christoph Tang. She joined the clinical Nature Reviews in 2010 as a Cross-journal Associate Editor, before moving to Nature Reviews Rheumatology and Nature Reviews Gastroenterology & Hepatology as Associate Editor in 2011, becoming Senior Editor in 2012. She was Acting Chief Editor for Nature Reviews Gastroenterology & Hepatology September 2012–August 2013 and became Chief Editor in August 2014.

Iain received his BSc and Master’s from the University of Southampton, UK, studying marine biology. Following a period working as a clinical trials laboratory technician at Queen Mary University of London, UK, he completed his PhD training at King’s College London, UK. His research concerned a potential new therapeutic for osteoporosis, derived from a marine sponge found on the Great Barrier Reef. Iain joined Nature Reviews Gastroenterology & Hepatology as a Locum Associate Editor in January 2016, becoming a permanent member of the team in June 2016.

Darren has a PhD in cancer genetics from Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory's Watson School of Biological Sciences, New York, USA, where he worked in Scott Lowe's laboratory, using RNA interference screens to identify genetic modifiers of chemotherapy response. He continued this interest in translational cancer research as a postdoctoral fellow with Alan Ashworth at the Breakthrough Breast Cancer Research Centre, London, UK, where he focused on synthetic lethality approaches to cancer therapy using DNA repair inhibitors. Darren is a Senior Editor of Nature Reviews Genetics.

Alexandra Flemming a.flemming@nature.com

Alexandra has a PhD (summa cum laude) from the Max-Plack Institute of Immunology in Freiburg, Germany. Her thesis, under the supervision of Michael Reth, investigated the role of the B cell signalling protein SLP-65 in the malignant transformation of B cells. She continued her interest in B cells and cancer during her postdoctoral research as an EMBO fellow and a Human Frontiers Science Programme fellow at the Cancer Research UK London Research Institute, in the lab of Facundo Batista. Before becoming the Chief Editor of Nature Reviews Immunology, Alexandra was a Senior Editor at Nature Reviews Drug Discovery.

Lucy Bird nri@nature.com

Lucy Bird's interest in immunology arose from her undergraduate degree in Cellular and Molecular Pathology at the University of Bristol, UK. Following this, she obtained a DPhil from Oxford University, UK, where she worked with Andrew McMichael and Paul Bowness investigating the role of HLA-B27 in autoimmune disease. She joined Nature Reviews Immunology as copyeditor in February 2003 and soon became an established member of the editorial team, first as an Associate Editor, and then as the Chief Editor. Now, following the births of her two children, she works part time as a Senior Editor, allowing her to satisfy her appetite for editing and all aspects of immunology.

Kirsty Minton studied at Cambridge University, UK, gaining a triple first in Natural Sciences, where she specialized in cellular immunology and pathology. Yvonne Bordon's fascination with the immune system developed during her undergraduate days at the University of Glasgow, UK. After graduating with an honours degree in Immunology, she chose to remain in Glasgow and conducted her PhD studies with Prof. Allan Mowat and Dr Rob Nibbs. During this time, the main focus of her research was exploring the role of chemokine receptors in intestinal immune responses. Yvonne joined the Nature Reviews Immunology editorial team in December 2009, where she continues to broaden her knowledge and understanding of all things immunological.

Christine-Maria Horejs nrmaterials@nature.com

Christine received her MSci and PhD in nanobiotechnology from the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna, Austria, studying protein conformations and self-assembly using both biophysical and theoretical approaches. She then joined the lab of Molly Stevens at Imperial College London, UK, investigating the extracellular matrix and cell–material interactions. In 2015, she moved to Karolinska Institute, Sweden, conducting in vivo studies of anti-fibrotic biomaterials. In September 2017, she joined the Nature Reviews Materials team as an Associate Editor.

Susan completed her PhD at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, Sydney, Australia, before moving to Sweden to undertake postdoctoral research at the Stem Cell Institute at Lund University. She joined Nature Reviews Gastroenterology & Hepatology as an Associate Editor in 2008, and was appointed Chief Editor of Nature Reviews Nephrology in 2009. Susan handles reviews and commentaries relating to any aspect of cancer and the kidney, including kidney cancer, nonrenal cancers that cause renal damage, the nephrotoxic effects of anticancer therapies, the effects of immunosuppressive or renal therapies on cancer risk and drug dosing in cancer patients with renal insufficiency.

Ellen completed a PhD at the School of Cancer Studies, University of Birmingham, UK, before joining Nature Research as an Assistant Editor in 2011. She worked briefly on Nature Reviews Cardiology, Nature Reviews Clinical Oncology and Nature Reviews Rheumatology before moving to Nature Reviews Nephrology as an Associate Editor in 2012. She was promoted to Senior Editor in 2014. Annette Fenner nruro@nature.com

Annette studied at Imperial College London, UK, where she completed her medical degree and intercalated a BSc and PhD in Endocrinology. During her PhD, she worked on hypothalamic peptides in the control of reproduction, with a particular focus on the role of kisspeptins. Bringing with her an interest in the field of sexual medicine, she joined the Nature Reviews Urology team as an Associate Editor in 2010, and was promoted to Chief Editor in 2011.

Louise undertook her BSc at Bangor University, UK, and continued her studies at Glasgow University, UK, gaining a distinction in her MRes. She then worked as a research technician at the University of Birmingham, UK, and a research assistant in the Institute of Cell Signalling at the University of Nottingham, UK, before returning to Birmingham to conduct her PhD. Throughout her studies she took a keen interest in science communication, becoming a STEM Ambassador and editing for the Oxbridge Biotech Roundtable Review. She joined the Nature Reviews Urology team in June 2014 as an Associate Editor.
