Recent interest in global health among American Academy of Pediatrics Newborn Specialists

The Section on Neonatal Perinatal Medicine (SoNPM) Global Health Subcommittee would like to update the neonatal-perinatal medicine community about our efforts. Global Health (GH) is a focus area for the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). To support this mission, the AAP Section on Global Health (SoGH), formerly Section on International Child Health (SOICH), has provided a forum for pediatricians interested in GH since 1996. This body has facilitated global clinical and research partnerships and provided support for child health [1]. However, many newborn specialists interested in GH are not members of the SoGH. The Vermont Oxford Network (VON) is a collaboration of interdisciplinary health professionals working to change the landscape of neonatal care and supports quality improvement (QI) initiatives in over 1300 hospitals worldwide [2]. While many providers are involved in VON-sponsored local QI initiatives, few directly engage globally through VON. Involvement of newborn specialists in clinical and research partnerships focused on global child health will be necessary to combat the disproportionate burden of neonatal death on global under-five mortality [3]. These deaths predominantly occur in low- and middle-income countries [4] and are often associated with a lack of quality perinatal care [5].

The SoNPM GH Subcommittee was formed in November 2018 to complement work from the AAP SoGH and VON. To better understand GH experience and expertise within the SoNPM and to assess needs, the Subcommittee on GH surveyed the SoNPM membership. This survey had three purposes: (1) identify individuals already engaged in projects abroad; (2) identify SoNPM members not currently involved in GH but who were interested in international work; and (3) better understand how the subcommittee could best facilitate engagement.
