Science of engineering bioactive materials constitutes a multidisciplinary field that focuses on designing and developing materials which can interact with biological systems in a safe and beneficial way. The primary goal of the field is to create substances that can enhance and/or support biological processes, while minimizing possible adverse reactions of a living organism. Bioactive materials engineering has welcomed significant success across various research and application areas, ranging from biodegradable stents, to adaptive dental restorations, to neurological and ophthalmic implants. The magnitude and variety of the field’s achievements illustrate the transformative impact of bioactive materials engineering on medicine, healthcare, and biotechnology. As research and development in this field continue, it is likely that even more innovative applications and breakthroughs will emerge, further improving the quality of life for individuals and expanding our capabilities in healthcare and beyond.

This Collection welcomes original, applied research on design and applications of bioactive materials, including biodegradability, biocompatibility, and surface engineering. We especially welcome interdisciplinary submissions.
