Social determinants of health

Aside from genetic and behavioral factors, an individual’s health is influenced by a range of social and socioeconomic factors that shape the environment they live in. These factors include housing and food security, access to education, social support and integration, employment, and a safe physical environment. According to the WHO, these social conditions may explain 30-55% of variation in health outcomes. Disparities in these factors drive health inequities both across and within countries, with the gap between the most privileged and the most vulnerable widening by many measures. Understanding the role of social determinants in health is critical for improving the health of all people.

This Collection welcomes primary research in the field of health sciences on how social factors shape individual health.

This Collection supports and amplifies research related to SDG 3.
