Bioceramics are biomaterials that are largely used in biomedical applications; they can be divided in three types: bioactive ceramics, bioinert ceramics, and bioresorbable ceramics. Bioactive ceramics (e.g. apatite, glass ceramics) can directly interact with human tissue, supporting its growth and regeneration; whilst bioinert ceramic (e.g. alumina, zirconia) are inactive and can be used for mechanical load carrier, where applied in the human body. In contrast, bioresorbable ceramics (e.g.  gypsum, calcium carbonate) can be gradually resorbed by the body and can be essential for tissue engineering.

This Collection invites original research article on Bioceramics, spanning from their production to their use in in exciting biomedical applications.
