In order to allow for development of agricultural biotechnology that is controlled, progressive, positive, and thus well accepted by the general public, there is a need to focus on two main fields of application: First, non-food applications of agbiotech in developed countries for the research & development of solvents, lubricating oils, detergents, and biodegradables, that do not contain volatile organic compounds. These products will replace the current petrochemical products that in the long term are condemned by new environmental requirements on a national and international level. Second, the development of food applications of agbiotech for developing countries could correct various essential nutrient deficiencies, including vitamin and iron deficiencies, that lead to serious health problems for hundreds of millions of people.
