Commentary on: The prevalence and risk factors of sexual dysfunction among females with inflammatory bowel disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis

The prevalence and risk factors of sexual dysfunction in females with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have gained attention in recent years, prompting extensive epidemiological research. This commentary offers a critical analysis of a systematic review and meta-analysis titled “The prevalence and risk factors of sexual dysfunction among females with inflammatory bowel disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis” authored by Xiaolong Zhang, et al. [1]. This study provides valuable insights into the prevalence of female sexual dysfunction (FSD) in individuals with IBD and identifies the quality of life as a significant risk factor for FSD in this population.

IBD, encompassing ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn’s disease (CD), significantly impacts the lives of affected individuals, with symptoms ranging from abdominal pain to emotional distress. Accumulating evidence shows that these diseases develop due to inadequate inflammatory response to intestinal microbes in people with a genetic predisposition [2]. The diseases progress with various attacks that result in complications requiring frequent hospitalization and surgical interventions [3]. According to National Health Interview Survey data, while 0.9% (1.8 million) of American adults had IBD in 1999, this rate increased to 1.3% (3.1 million) in 2015 [4, 5]. Notably, a higher prevalence of IBD was identified among adults aged ≥45 years, Hispanics, non-Hispanic whites, and less educated adults, currently unemployed, or living in poverty [5].
