X-ray artifacts - puff or bluff?

Artifacts in dental x-rays can be a common occurrence. Using PSPs, which were first introduced in 1994, can lead to unwanted artifacts. Multiple publications describe various artifacts and errors.1,2,3 These include operator errors, scanning machine errors, and sensor defects. Bite marks, which are a sensor defect, are not uncommon; these can happen without being noticed by the operator.

While most of the time these opacities caused by a defective PSP can easily be recognised as such, our case clearly shows that there is a risk of defects aligning with anatomical structures in a coherent way, thus - in this incident - leading to a misinterpretation of a sealer puff.
