How important/controversial was this paper at the time of publication?

Loretz's ideas were presented a few years after dentistry fought in the 1920s and 1930s to prevent unqualified dentists from carrying out dental treatment.1 Nevertheless, the battle would have remained etched on the memory of dentists from the period who were still practising in 1943. Therefore, it is likely Loretz's article would have been controversial, which explains her attempt to reassure BDJ readers that trained dental nurses (DNs) would have 'duties so numerous and absorbing that they will have little time and inclination for ["gate-crashing"]the dental surgeon's work'.
