Abstract 105
Aims: Developmental subnormality in children in infants born prematurely is a significant problem. The aetiology is still uncertain. We tested the hypothesis that educational problems in adolescents could be predicted by an assessment at one year.
Methods 150 infants born before 33 weeks gestation were admitted to a tertiary referral centre between 1979-1982. They had a structured neurological examination and Griffith's developmental assessment at one year of corrected age. A further assessment was performed at 14-15 years including an enquiry into school performance and assessment of reading age.
Results (Table)
Conclusion Impaired neurodevelopmental assessment at one year of corrected age in very preterm infants is significantly associated (p<0.001) with the need for extra educational provision and is also associated with reading age (trend p<0.03) at 14-15 years.
