Linear response of IGF-1 and FT3 to parenteral nutrition: results of an observational study

Parenteral nutrition (PN) support in hospitalised patients is often based on requirements calculated with published formulas.1 However, in acutely ill and post-surgical patients, this practice contrast with the reported improved clinical outcome if calories are provided at below the calculated requirements.2 Generic formulas are therefore not applicable in these settings.

Blood insulin-like growth-factor-1 (IGF-1) and free triiodothyronine (FT3) concentrations reflect nutritional status.3, 4 Aiming to a more individualised care of patients, we hypothesised that IGF-1 and FT3 would be responsive to PN, which would allow the individual adjustment of requirements.
