Comment on addressing comments by Fernstrom

Humphries and Pretorius (2009) in ‘Addressing comments by JD Fernstrom,’ which criticizes the work of Humphries and Pretorius, suggest that ‘it appears that (Fernstrom) does not trust research suggesting that aspartame may be detrimental to human health.’ Consider, however, that critical to understanding the so-called ‘controversy’ about the safety/toxicity of aspartame is the fact that Fernstrom presently has a consulting agreement with the Ajinomoto Company Inc. (Fernstrom and Fernstrom, 2007), manufacturer of both monosodium glutamate and aspartame, and has been an agent of both the glutamate and aspartame industries for years (Fernstrom et al., 1996).

That information was not acknowledged in Fernstrom's Letter to the Editor (Fernstrom, 2009).
