Giving researchers the tools to answer those questions is the goal of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Somatic Cell Genome Editing Program (SCGE), says P.J. Brooks, coordinator of SCGE and program director in the NIH National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences Office of Rare Diseases Research. The program was officially launched last January; details about the first phase were announced in October, with the NIH Common Fund committing $86 million to support 21 grants over the next five years.

Rather than focusing on a specific type of editor or targeting a specific disease, the aim is to provide the necessary tools to develop and test whether any approach a researcher or clinician might want to take—existing or yet to be developed—is both safe and effective before they try to take their therapy into the clinic. “The program is very much intended to be agnostic in terms of the types of editing modalities that we support,” says Brooks.
