The conduct of clinical trials is undergoing a profound transformation from fixed, physical locations with the principal investigator as the central figure, to flexible locations with patients and their medical data at the core. Forces driving this change include the poor performance and economic limitations of traditional community-based investigative sites, advancements in data collection technologies, the high volume of rich patient data and analytics, and a strong desire to engage patients as partners in clinical research.
