POLICY

Weighing in It's official: obesity is now a disease. The American Medical Association made the classification on 18 June in a policy decision that could ultimately encourage doctors to pay more attention to the malady and spur health insurers to pay for weight-loss treatments. Steven Smith, president-elect of the Obesity Society, a Silver Spring, Maryland–based no-profit, expects another knock-on effect. “This is going to drive renewed interest in drug development,” he says.
