Radio synthesis observations of the globular cluster M4

Abstract

The presence of an 11-ms pulsar in the direction of the globular cluster M4 and at about the same distance has recently been reported1,2. Because of the large primary beam of the antenna used in the discovery, the relation of the pulsar to the cluster remained uncertain. We have made sensitive radio aperture synthesis observations and show that the pulsar indeed lies within the core of the globular cluster as projected onto the sky. We also report the absence of any other point sources within the core of the cluster having flux densities greater than one-seventh of that of the pulsar.
