Sidescan sonar recognition of subaqueous landforms in Loch Earn, Scotland

Abstract

Cores obtained during sedimentological studies of British lakes reveal the presence of disturbed layering in slope face and slope foot areas, but undisturbed materials on areas of flat floor. Smith1 and others have suggested that these features may be due to slumping of the unconsolidated deposits. The abundance of slumping indicated by cores in many lake basins suggested that slope failure and land slipping are very widespread. We now report that sidescan sonar surveys of the slopes of Loch Earn, Scotland, show the presence of over 100 examples of subaqueous slumps which appear to fall into three morphological types. Pinger surveys confirm sediment thickness variations, supporting suggestions of sliding in such areas.
