Expression of Ia antigen on epidermal keratinocytes in graft-versus-host disease

Abstract

The genetic information for various distinct immune functions in mice can be assigned to one or more subregions of the I region, which is located within the major histocompatibility complex of chromosome 17 (refs 1, 2). Cell-surface antigens encoded by genes which map within the I region are referred to as Ia antigens3 and appear predominantly on B cells, monocytes and certain classes of macrophage, and have been described on endothelia and mitogen-stimulated T cells4. Ia antigens are also expressed on thymic epithelium5 and epithelia of lactating breast6 and malignant melanoma cells in culture7. Ia antigen is known to occur in the epidermis but its precise location has been controversial; available evidence has suggested that the la antigen is restricted to the Langerhans cell8. Here we show that it appears in keratinocytes in graft-versus-host disease.
