Mélange in the Trondheim Nappe suggests a new tectonic model for central Norwegian Caledonides

Abstract

Extensive mélange exists near the base of the Trondheim Nappe, indicating tectonisation of syndepositionally deformed chaotic deposits. The mélange is associated with other features that are characteristic of forearc accretionary prisms. Such a tectonic setting for the Trondheim Nappe has profound implications for the evolution of the Scandinavian Caledonides.
