Appearance of fibronectin during differentiation of mouse teratocarcinoma in vitro

Abstract

THE cell surface glycoprotein known as fibronectin (reviewed in ref. 1) is absent from transformed cells and its distribution changes during morphogenesis, as kidney differentiation has shown2. We report here that pluripotential embryonal carcinoma (EC) cells from a mouse terato-carcinoma acquire surface-associated fibronectin as they differentiate into cells with the morphology of endoderm. We also report that the fibronectin is concentrated on the basal lamina-like extracellular matrix of embryoid bodies which develop in culture. This suggests that fibronectin has a function in the organisation of structures during morphogenesis.
