Proterozoic oceanic crust at Bou Azzer

Abstract

THE precise nature of the last great Precambrian orogeny (600 Myr BP) is the subject of controversy, and views diverge as to whether it was a collision orogeny1–3 or whether in situ deformation of an intracratonic orogenic belt occurred4–6. Geological evidence is given here, indicating the former presence of an oceanic domain along the northern margin of the West African Craton.
