Role of growth hormone in glycosaminoglycan synthesis by articular cartilage

Abstract

LITTLE is known of the factors which regulate the turnover of the glycosaminoglycans, chondroitin sulphate arid keratan sulphate, in articular cartilage. Studies using costal cartilage1 suggest that growth hormone (somatotrophin) has little direct action on glycosaminoglycan synthesis. Instead its action is thought to be mediated by the liver2 which produces a different hormone, somatomedin, previously known as ‘sulphation factor’ because it stimulates the incorporation of 35SO4 into costal cartilage.
