Abstract
BERGER et al. reported1 that ribonucleosides and deoxynucleosides can be differentiated by their effects on the optical spectra of copper(II) acetate in dimethylsulphoxide (DMSO). They suggested that the 2′ and 3′ oxygen atoms in ribonucleosides bridge pairs of copper atoms, forming 1 : 1 copper(II) acetate/ribonucleoside complexes1. We have examined the species in such solutions by EPR. Optical spectra are not ideal as the bands are broad, and components of mixtures cannot readily be resolved. EPR spectra of spin-coupled (S = 1) copper(II) dimers differ appreciably, however, from those of monomeric (S = ½) compounds. Moreover, they are sensitive to the nature of the bridges2–5 and to the symmetry about the Cu–Cu axis. Our conclusions from these studies differ from those obtained previously1.
