Elevation of total serum IgE in rats following helminth parasite infection

Abstract

HELMINTH parasites provide the most potent stimulus known for the biosynthesis of IgE. In every species which has been studied, infections with parasitic worms lead to the production of high levels of reaginic or IgE antibodies against parasite antigens1,2 and, in man, greatly elevated levels of total IgE occur in most individuals infected with any one of a variety of helminths including Ascaris lumbricoides3, Capillaria philipinensis4 and ancylostomes5.
