A-type doubling in the CH molecule

Abstract

ALMOST a year ago we set out to calculate an accurate value of the Λ-doubling in the lowest rotational level of the X2Π½ state of CH, to assist the radioastronomers, who had been searching for this species in interstellar space for some years. The value we have obtained, which is reported here, represents a substantial improvement on the results of terrestrial experiments1,2, but its significance is reduced by the astronomical observation of the species, which was reported during the course of this work3. The result of the latter experiment indicates just how close our calculation comes to predicting the actual splitting and clearly underlines the power of the methods now available in theoretical chemistry.
