Abstract
PROSTAGLANDINS have both inhibitory and stimulatory effects on inflammatory and immune processes1. The capacity of the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents, aspirin and indo-methacin (IM), to inhibit the synthesis of certain prostaglandins emphasises the potential importance of this hormone system in the pathogenesis and treatment of inflammatory arthritis2. Since the prostaglandins inhibit certain cellular functions involved in the production of some forms of arthritis3, suppress the inflammatory response of adjuvant arthritis4–7 and yet induce an acute inflammatory response when injected into the dog stifle joint8, there remain certain paradoxes with regard to the role of prostaglandins in inflammatory joint diseases.
