Origin of Plastids and the Phylogeny of Algae

Abstract

THERE have been many suggestions that chloroplasts are derived from endosymbiotic prokaryotes1–4. All the proposed evolutionary schemes, with the exception of Raven's5, have avoided the question of exactly where the transition from the prokaryotic to the eukaryotic condition in plants occurred6–13. In this article I will discuss Raven's hypothesis (Fig. 1) and present an alternative hypothesis (Fig. 2).
