Abstract
THE ecology of the North Indian Ramapithecus has been the subject of recent discussion1–3. In such discussion the tectonic framework and uplift of the Himalayas and Siwalik sedimentation during the Miocene must be taken into account. The Middle Miocene is usually correlated with the third major upheaval during which the Himalayas acquired their major features characterized by mountain ranges interspersed by large river valleys and swamps. The bulk of the Nagri fauna associated with Ramapithecus is known from Haritalyangar4. The ecology can be studied by correlating the extinct mammalian material including Ramapithecus with the flora.
