Abstract
THE morphology of the mitochondrion has been extensively investigated by conventional negative staining and thin section techniques. These have shown that the inner mitochondrial membrane possesses a headpiece-stalk sector1–3 and that heart and liver mitochondria undergo discrete configurational changes in vitro4,5 and in situ6. Other structural and morphological features of the mitochondrial membrane have been postulated by Korman et al.7 and Sjöstrand and Barajas8. Here we report our observations of isolated heavy beef heart mitochondria using the freeze-etching technique.
