Enhancement of Metastases by L-Asparaginase in a Mouse Tumour System

Abstract

IT has been reported that the new antileukaemic and antitumour agent, L-asparaginase, has significant immunosuppressive activity1–6. We have studied the effect of L-asparaginase on the mouse tumour sarcoma 180 grown as a foot implant, which metastasizes only rarely to the regional popliteal node, but metastasizes extensively after the host has been treated with an immunosuppressive agent such as antilymphocyte serum7. There was a striking enhancement of metastases when the mice were treated with L-asparaginase even in doses considerably smaller than those used by previous investigators which had no antitumour effect.
