Nitrogenous Compounds of the Colorado Green River Formation Oil Shale: A Preliminary Analysis by Mass Spectrometry

Abstract

FEW recent papers describe the nitrogen compounds in shales, and all data so far have been obtained from constituents of the shale oil produced on retorting of sediment samples1–3. Although nitrogen compounds represent very minor constituents of the total organics in shales, a study of these compounds seemed necessary in view of the limited data on their distribution in shales. Such studies would complement the active investigations of sediment lipid fractions. We therefore undertook an analysis—as yet preliminary—of nitrogen compounds directly extractable from the Green River Formation and here present some results.
