Abstract
ALTHOUGH the effect of magnesium ions on ganglionic and on neuromuscular transmission has been widely studied in recent years, little is known about the mechanism by which these ions may affect the peristaltic reflex1,2. It has been known for a long time that subcutaneous or intravenous injection of magnesium salts in rabbits abolishes or considerably diminishes peristalsis3. The present experiments therefore set out to analyse the blocking action of magnesium on peristalsis by studying its effect on acetylcholine release and on the acetylcholine receptors.
