Catalysis of Polynucleotides in Ionic Reactions

Abstract

THE catalytic action of compounds of high molecular weight has attracted a lot of interest recently1–3 and catalytic efficiency has been found to be considerably larger for polymer catalysts than for catalysts of low molecular weight in suitable conditions. Similar conclusions have also been reached for various synthetic polyelectrolytes catalysing reactions between suitable charged ionic species4–6. We thought it interesting to extend our investigation to polynucleotides, for the mechanism for synthesizing them is believed to be essentially a DNA-catalysed (polymerization) reaction between ionic species with negative charges7,11.
