Semi-annual Variation in Upper-atmosphere Density: Evidence of a 33-Month Periodicity

Abstract

IT is well known1–3 that the density of the upper atmosphere at heights between 190 and 1,200 km shows a semi-annual variation, with maxima in April and October, and minima in January and July—the July minimum usually being the deeper. During 1967 the semi-annual variation was particularly large3–5, and it is of interest to know whether this large variation is persisting into 1968.
