L-Asparaginase Activity in Human and Animal Sera

Abstract

AN outstanding characteristic of the amino-acid enzyme L-asparaginase is its ability to inhibit the growth of certain rodent leukaemias1–3. This was established by Broome4, who followed up the observation by Kidd5 that administration of guinea-pig serum inhibited the growth of the Gardner lymphosarcoma (tumour 6C3HED) in C3H mice. L-Asparaginase can be extracted not only from guinea-pig serum but also from certain types of Escherichia coli6,7.
