Cosmic Blackbody Radiation and Isotropic Gamma Rays: a Contradiction?

Abstract

IN his article on the isotropic gamma ray background, Cheng1 presents instructive calculations of the production and propagation of inverse Compton gamma rays in an expanding universe. The latter part of the paper, however, includes a rather arbitrary application of these resultts which leaves the impression that there is some conflict between the observed X-ray and gamma ray background and the popular blackbody (3° K) interpretation of the observed microwave background. The purpose of this communication is to reassure big bang theorists that this is emphatically not the case.
