Abstract
THERE have been conflicting reports of the innervation of the pars intermedia of the amphibian pituitary. Dawson1 found material coloured by “neurosecretory” stains in the pars intermedia of Rana pipiens, but Iturriza2 could find no neurosecretory fibres with typical elementary neurosecretory vesicles at the level of ultrastructure in the pars intermedia of Bufo arenarum. Instead, fibres containing smaller vesicles were noted and subsequent investigations have indicated that these fibres contain monoamines, and may inhibit secretion of melanocyte stimulating hormone (MSH) from the pars intermedia3,4.
