Thyroid Antibodies, Down's Syndrome, and Maternal Age

Abstract

AN increase in the frequency of thyroid antibodies has been noted in mothers of subjects with Down's syndrome1–3. Since its previous report1, the Seattle–Winnipeg study has been expanded to 242 mothers of patients with Down's syndrome. 29 per cent had positive sera, compared with 16 per cent of an equal number of controls matched by age and sex (P < 0.005) (ref. 4).
