Synthesis of Formaldehyde from Methane in Electrical Discharges

Abstract

FORMALDEHYDE has been reported to be the chief product of the slow oxidation of methane initiated by electrical discharges1–4. The low energy yields so far obtained prevent this method from competing with the catalytic oxidation of methanol in the commercial production of formaldehyde.
