Levitation Melting Apparatus for Phase Equilibria Studies

Abstract

THE technique of levitation melting of reactive metals has been known for some years, and mostly applied to the investigation of a particular property such as density or the reaction of a metal with a gaseous environment1–5. In contrast, the apparatus described here can be used as a general tool for the investigation of high temperature phase equilibria under high purity conditions combining the advantages of melting without the use of a crucible with the rapid quenching of splat cooling6. It is at the moment being used for the investigation of phase equilibria in iron alloys, but it can be used for any metal or alloy which is a susceptor. A list of metals which have been levitated is given by Peifer7.
