Abstract
EARLIER investigations by Szabó1,2 and Tacquet et al.3 of the accumulation of iron in bacterial cells suggested that iron may play a different part in the metabolism of saprophytic mycobacteria. When cultivated on Löwen-stein–Jensen medium containing 1 per cent ferric-ammonium citrate some of the saprophytic strains accumulated iron within the cell, shown by red-pigmentation, whereas other strains did not accumulate iron.
