Polyprenols of Wood and Leaf Tissue of the Silver Birch, Betula verrucosa

Abstract

GREEN leaves of Aesculus hippocastanum and of Ficus elasticus contain mixtures of castaprenol-10, -11, -12 and -13 and ficaprenol-10, -11, -12 and -13 respectively1,2. The wood of these plants contains no polyprenols, but that of Betula verrucosa yields esters of betulaprenols -6, -7, -8 and -9 (refs. 3 and 4). It was of interest to investigate whether Betula leaves contained prenols of the latter type or, like many other higher plants5, of the castaprenol-type.
