Abstract
WE have found that morphine and certain of its analogues inhibit the growth of E. coli. With one of these, læevorphanol, complete inhibition is observed at a concentration of 10−3 M and partial inhibition at 10−4 M. Inhibition of growth is demonstrable in minimal as well as in rich culture media and is completely reversible on removal of the drug.
