Relation between Partition Coefficients and Properties of Solvents

Abstract

PUBLISHED data on the partition of non-electrolytes between water and different organic solvents are abundant ; but no successful attempt has been made to correlate the partition coefficients with the properties of solvents. No macroscopic property such as dielectric constant, refractive index or dipole moment can be correlated with partition coefficients in a simple manner. I have found the correlation between Hildebrand's solubility parameters of solvents and partition coefficients to be the most satisfactory.
