Abstract
THE evidence collected so far for an effect of growth-promoting concentrations of auxins on cation uptake by plant cells gives a somewhat confused picture. Auxins have been variously reported as promotive, inhibitory, or without effect, according to the conditions of the investigation1–5. I wish to report here experiments yielding clear evidence for a marked effect of indolyl-3-acetic acid (IAA) on potassium and ammonium uptake by segments of sunflower hypocotyl. In the case of potassium the effect is stimulatory, in that of ammonium, inhibitory.
