Abstract
RATS fed a diet containing yeast as the sole source of protein—the ‘necrogenic yeast diet’ of Lindan and Himsworth1—develop, after a latent period of varying length, a fatal liver necrosis. While the phenomenon itself is well known and has been extensively studied, there is little information available concerning the changes which take place during this period of latency, and which culminate in the rather sudden onset of liver necrosis. It is, therefore, of interest to see that Schwarz, who has extensively studied the problem of dietary liver necrosis, considers that there exists, in the animal fed the necrogenic yeast diet, a “lack of glyconeogenesis”2.
