Variability of Brucella Phages

Abstract

Brucella phages have been investigated by a number of authors, for example, Drożewkina et al.1,2 arid Parnas et al.3,4, but no mention is made of the different kinds of plaques in the culture of the indicator strains. Brinley-Morgan et al.5 observed two kinds of plaques of a Brucella phage; one of small size 0.1–2 mm. and another of large size 3–5 mm. McDuff, Jones and Wilson6 observed small, large and turbid plaques of a Brucella phage, the size of plaques being dependent on the rate of adsorption of phage to cells of the indicator strain. If the adsorption time is limited to 10 min., plaques of dimensions of 5–6 mm. are obtained. Small plaques are not observed. Turbid plaques are obtained on the smooth-intermediate phase of the indicator strain. At the suggestion of Prof. Parnas I have investigated the variability of Brucella phages.
