Abstract
SCOMBROID fishes belonging to the family Istiophoridae are rather uncommon in the Mediterranean. However, a species has been known for a long time and was actually discovered there. It is Tetrapturus belone, described by Rafinesque1 from Sicily, where it is captured chiefly during the summer months; later, it was found in other localities, for example, Spain, Genoa, Naples, Malta and the Adriatic.
